Community structure and recovery in cryptic intertidal communities reflects dynamics on open‐surface communities

چکیده

Research on intertidal community structure and recovery in the California Current System has largely focused macrophytes invertebrates occupying two-dimensional, readily studied “open” rock surfaces. However, most rocky shores have a “third” dimension that includes channels, cracks, crevices, overhangs whose organismal assemblages, termed “cryptic communities,” are poorly studied. Cryptic communities not only share many species with those more accessible surfaces but also include high abundances of colonial such as tunicates, sponges, bryozoans, hydrozoans. We investigated abundance diversity cryptic tested their from disturbance by comparing removal plots to undisturbed controls for ~1.5 years. Additionally, we whether varied contrasting large-scale levels ecological subsidies (invertebrate recruitment, nutrients, phytoplankton) local-scale microhabitat differences (emersion solar irradiation) Oregon Coast. compared rates open-surface communities. In communities, site explained (92%) variance plots, while metrics had little (1.2%) effect. Further, were faster at higher subsidy inputs than one lower both noncryptic Hence, larger scale environmental drivers appeared important within Our research provides novel insight into surge channel dynamics.

Spatial structure and dynamics of urban communities

This paper explores the evolution and spatial organization of urban communities in a daily cycle of a city using scalable methods of social network analysis. Using mobile phone network records, we have observed spatial patterns in community structures at fine spatial scales which are most likely related to the activities typical to the different functional regions of a city. It is known that in...

Cryptic microbial communities in Antarctic deserts.

T he Antarctic Dry Valleys, situated in the Ross Sea region of Eastern Antarctica, are often referred to as one of the most extreme environments on Earth. Although this statement is subject to some argument, largely surrounding the issue of what ‘‘extreme’’ actually means, there is no arguing that the combination of macroenvironmental and microenvironmental conditions to which organisms living ...

The centrality of community dynamics in the socio-economic recovery of devastated communities.

OBJECTIVE To assess and explore the health and socio-economic outcomes of Jubilee, a community on the Caribbean island of Grenada hit by Hurricane Ivan in 2004 and to identify remaining barriers to recovery. METHODS The assessment consisted of a mixed methods approach employing observations, household surveys, in-depth interviews and focus groups. RESULTS Eighty-five per cent of the residen...

Impacts of anthropogenic stress on rocky intertidal communities

Rocky shores provide a harsh environment for marine organisms and we briefly discuss natural sources of variation in community structure before considering anthropogenic impacts in detail. We review impacts caused by (a) acute disturbances: oil spills, toxic algal blooms and (b) chronic disturbances: nutrient pollution, oil, heavy metals, pesticides, antifouling paints, collecting, trampling/ha...
